My Review

For being a book geared toward the young adult readers I thought this was a good book. It had the feel of the movie , Disturbing Behavior featuring Katie Holmes and James Marsden. I liked the references that the author put in the book with Body Snatchers and the Stepford Wives both being metaphors. T…

For a short book, this is a good one. I would have liked the horror level to be a little more amped up but for the most part it was there. The first time that I really found what was happening to Paul spine-tingling was when he was visiting Stillwell for the first time. The images of the crime scene was gruesome. Not to mention the cre…

Come check into Barbizon Hotel

Image
THE DOLLHOUSEtells the dual storylines of two women who, decades apart, are enthralled by the allure of the real-life Barbizon Hotel for Women, which, from 1927 to 1981, was an exclusive residence for young, single women who wanted to make it in the big city, including Liza Minelli, Grace Kelly, Joan Crawford, Joan Didion, and Sylvia Plath.
When Davis walked through the doors of the Barbizon 63 a few years ago, she was struck by the history of the building and conceived of a novel: partially set in the Barbizon of 1952, and partially in the condos of today. When Darby McLaughlin arrives at the Barbizon Hotel in 1952, secretarial school enrollment in hand, she is everything her modeling agency hall mates aren't: plain, self-conscious, homesick, and utterly convinced she doesn't belong. Yet when Darby befriends Esme, a Barbizon maid, she's introduced to an entirely new side of New York City: seedy downtown jazz clubs where the music is as addictive as the heroin that's…

My Review

To be honest, I was unsure about this book. I had already formed my opinions about this book before I had even read it. This is a situation where you can't judge a book by its content. The author did a very thoughtful job of portraying the coming of age and sexual orientation. I was very impressed. I enjoyed that the author did not force lots of sex or over the top talk about sexual orientation. The author let me the reader slowly get to know Lena and Juliet as friends first and then as a couple. They were a sweet coup…

A drama ripped from today’s headlines

A hundred miles to the east, six American hippies on a joy ride across Africa, crash their VW bus in to a cemetery. While they wait for repairs they scandalize the local missionaries and Brenda Carter impulsively marries an African student.

2013: Brenda Carter brings Sarah, her deeply troubled granddaughter to Africa to explore her roots and meet her grandfather; the man Brenda married and abandoned fifty years before. When a Peace Corps worker is murdered, a baby is kidnapped, and all contact with the outside world is severed by a torrential rain storm, Sarah becomes an unwilling investigator making the connection between the abandoned boy from the Congo, the truth behind her grandmother’s marriage, and fifty years of undercover CIA involvement in the politics of Africa.

A compelling tale of Africa today where witchdoctors co-exis…

Amelia opens a present. A present that's not a present. No, it's a friendly looking alien called Uglesnoo from the planet Pluto. Uglesnoo needs to leave right away for the Moon. Uglesnoo also desperately needs Amelia's help. His sister is very sick. Should Amelia venture into outer space?

My Review

I actually read book Two: Amelia, the Venutons and the Golden Cage before I read this book one. Although, I had no problems reading book two, I would suggest you do read the books in order. Just because this book one helps to set the stage for the next book and introduces you to Uglesnoo. Yet, in book two I really got to know Uglesnoo and became familiar with his planet. This is a fun series for the younger readers with cool characters. I like that the author does not use too large of words or take up too much space on the pages with too many words and sentences. Simple is better. Also, the pictures do help tell the story and are colorful. Young readers will enjoy taking a journe…
