Penelope Grace, usually forgotten under the shadow of her twin sister's perfection, tries her hardest to hide her freakish ability to see into anyone's soul.

Until she senses an unusual energy like a human-shaped void in the universe. When Penny investigates the source, she gets tossed through a crack in time along with the cute boy next door. The Void follows them through history, increasing the dangers as if testing Penny. But what is it testing for? And why does it claim to know her better than even she knows herself? Even as Penny searches for answers, she must fight to survive the tragedies of both the past and future in order to get back home.

My Review

I liked the concept of this book. Penny's ability as an empath intrigued me. She uses all of her senses but she can sense "energies" or "auras" of people and things around her. Penny's age of sixteen year old did come out sometimes. What I mean by this is that she did act her age but other times she reacted to situations more maturely. There was something mysterious about her companion "Stranger". It was not just due to his name.  Yet, another character that I liked is Ricky. He is assertive.

I did kind of feel like I was transported back to 1915. Yet, a more fantasy type of 1915. There was a lot of movement in the story to keep it going. However, at the same time I felt a little disjointed as if there was so much going on that I couldn't find my footing. Although, this book is a bit dark; which I did enjoy. There were more good things that I liked about this book that would make me consider reading the next book.

Falling For a Stranger by Aspen Bassett

Have you ever fallen for someone you’ve never met? Like you know nothing about this person’s history but dang, they’ve got a great smile and you just know you’d get along and be happy forever? I can say that about half the Marvel Cinematic Universe plus a couple guys who have no idea we dated in my brain for a few months.

In my book, A Penny Lost, the lead character gets stranded in the past with a complete stranger who’s lost his memories. She can ask all she wants but he can’t tell her anything about himself, not even his name and thus, Stranger was born. Readers have fallen in love with Stranger just as much as I have which makes me extremely happy. The classic boy next door kind of character, Stranger’s aura is a constant sunshine yellow, a nod to his optimistic outlook despite their impossible circumstances. He’s a great support system for Penny and I feel everyone deserves a guy like him in their lives.

Stranger is the ultimate gentleman in all the ways that truly count. He’s there for Penny, he treats her like an equal even during the dangerous fight scenes, which I’m sad to say is still a decently rare thing in literature. He’s not threatened by her strength either which I love. In fact, he completely supports it and trusts her 100%.

The relationship between Penny and Stranger points out the insignificance of one’s history in the present. Penny has no idea who Stranger is, what kind of life he comes from, but she knows he’s there for her now and really, that’s what matters. Whether or not that changes throughout the trilogy, only time can tell...

Have you read A Penny Lost yet? What do you think of Stranger’s character? Once you finished your book, contact me through social media or my website, www.aspenbassett.com and let me know what you think!
